New CEO, new direction for SALC

We are delighted to announce that SALC has appointed Ewan Jones as its Chief Executive Officer.

Ewan has extensive experience of the local council sector through his work as a town councillor with Bruton Town Council, including four years as mayor, and as Co-Chair of the South East Somerset Local Community Network. He is a former director of SALC, where he played a key role in negotiations with Somerset Council on matters of devolution and SALC’s health & wellbeing programme.

Loretta Whetlor, chair of SALC said, “The interviewing panel was impressed with Ewan’s experience, commitment, and in-depth knowledge of local councils, but mostly we were excited to share in his vision for the future of our sector and the ways in which SALC can position itself to bring greater benefit to its members”.

Ewan said, “I’m honoured to have been appointed SALC’s Chief Executive Officer at such a vital time for city, town, and parish councils. I’m eager to get hands-on, working with the entire SALC team to help Somerset’s county association support and develop its member councils.”

Ewan can be contacted on ceo@somerset-alc.org.uk and welcomes invitations to visit meetings of Somerset’s city, town, and parish councils.

SALC’s new team structure

There have been some changes in the SALC office as we welcome Ewan as the new CEO, bid farewell to Justin and Ann, and see Sam and Simon with revised job roles.

Sam has been appointed to the role of Company Secretary and Council Support Officer. She undertakes the statutory and operational functions that keep the company operating according to the law, and is available Monday to Friday to support, train, and advise local council members.

Simon is SALC’s Training Support Officer. He will continue to support and advise member councils, with a greater role focus on sourcing and delivering training, as well as administering the training schedule and bookings. Simon works part time and is available Mondays and Fridays.

There are also changes underway to SALC’s dedicated health & wellbeing team as Ann Diment leaves us and we welcome new staff with a fresh look at how the programme can better support community health and wellbeing.

Fodo Higginson joins the SALC team from 11th June as the Community Health & Wellbeing Support Officer, whose role is to work with the Community Health & Wellbeing Officer in providing coherent support to parish, town, and city councils as they seek to improve the health and wellbeing of the Somerset population.
